This is my beautiful owl done by Chris Jones at Marc’s Tattooing. Scranton, PA.

This is my first. It’s a variation on a traditional English sailor tattoo of a barn swallow. It represents a completed 5,000 nautical mile voyage, and also is a sign of hope for return after a long journey. It’s relevant to me because while I come from Connecticut, I’ve been studying abroad in London (that’s a bit over 5,000 nautical miles roundtrip). It really means a lot to me. :)

This is my Dr Seuss tattoo. I got it with my dad last year, it was his first one. It’s special because we used to read Dr Seuss together all the time when I was younger. I have very fond memories of Green Eggs and Ham.

great detail…if I get another tat it has to be outside of Guam, unless anyone knows of a very bad ass local artist?

My tattoo of a series of crane birds was done by Lloyd @ Manly Tattoo in Sydney, Australia. It’s symbolic of growth, development and journey. He’s an amazing artist. Thanks Lloyd!

that’s pretty sick

This is my sixth and largest tattoo to date, my traditional style Medusa half-sleeve. I’ve always been a huge fan of Greek mythology, as well as traditional style tattoos so marrying the ideas was inevitable. For now it is only linework, but color and shading is just upon the horizon! Done by Luis Keys at Sacred Art Tattoos in Corvallis, OR.

The bluebird and the text are unrelated, and in a way, are opposites. The bluebird representing a poet/a poem, and the text representing an idea, but both are in relation to the heart and to love and my reactions to these things.

The Bluebird

The bluebird is a small tribute to one of my favourite poems by Bukowski, and to Bukowski himself (I think he’s wonderful).

The Poem:

there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say, stay in there, I’m not going
to let anybody see
you.

there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I pour whiskey on him and inhale
cigarette smoke
and the whores and the bartenders
and the grocery clerks
never know that
he’s
in there.

there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say,
stay down, do you want to mess
me up?
you want to screw up the
works?
you want to blow my book sales in
Europe?

there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too clever, I only let him out
at night sometimes
when everybody’s asleep.
I say, I know that you’re there,
so don’t be sad.

then I put him back,
but he’s still singing a little
in there, I haven’t quite let him
die
and we sleep together like
that
with our
secret pact
and it’s nice enough to
make a man
weep, but I don’t
weep, do
you?

The Text

The text reads ‘The heart is forever inexperienced’.

This is really a reminder to myself that in whatever we do, and how ever many times we fall in love, out of love, in love, out of love, the heart never really learns. It is always a child, and in that, it should be forgiven. It’s a reminder to be gentle with it, and that it’s okay to fall.

The Idea

The bluebird is my heart/holds it/hides it, whilst the text reminds me that it’s okay to let it out sometimes. It’s contrary, because when it comes to love, and loving, you must be both cautious and open.

“When adults say, “Teenagers think they are invincible” with that sly, stupid smile on their faces, they don’t know how right they are. We need never be hopeless, because we can never be irreparably broken. We think that we are invincible because we are. We cannot be born, and we cannot die. Like all energy, we can only change shapes and sizes and manifestations. They forget that when they get old. They get scared of losing and failing. But that part of us greater than the sum of our parts cannot begin and cannot end, and so it cannot fail.”
